As stated in the park’s founding documents, the original, overarching intent of Pisgah State Park was to preserve this unique area “with an emphasis on the wilderness experience.” The commercial timber harvesting taking place now in the park – with more planned for the future – is in direct conflict with this founding principal.
Our goal is to convince the state to modify Pisgah’s current management plan and reduce the impact of commercial timber harvesting on its recreation, historic and wilderness character.
Pisgah Defenders would also like the State to acknowledge the park’s original purpose as a place for people to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreational pursuits in a large, relatively undisturbed wilderness area where — as the original founding documents state — “nature, not the hand of man, prevails.”
